The Parent-Approved Kid-Safe Seal: our criteria

Each week one grid tile is a kids' or family channel. It only gets the Parent-Approved Seal if it passes every item on this written checklist. The seal is an editorial opinion from ChannelZap, written for parents. It is not a legal certification, it is not affiliated with YouTube, and it is never sold.

The checklist (all 10 must pass)

  1. Sample size: a person watched at least 10 videos in full (5 most recent, 3 most popular, 2 random from the last 12 months) plus any Shorts in that window
  2. Audience setting is plausible (child-directed content set to 'made for kids'; checked via the YouTube Data API status.madeForKids)
  3. Content: no sexual content, graphic violence, self-harm, dangerous challenges, profanity or scary-shock content; no medical or nutrition claims aimed at kids
  4. Commercial pressure: no undisclosed paid promotion, no pressure to buy, unboxing/toys only with a clear ad label, no gambling, loot-box or crypto promotion
  5. Data and contact: never asks kids for personal info or to move to other apps, DMs, Discord or Telegram; description links are safe
  6. Comments and live chat: off, or the latest 50 comments show active moderation
  7. AI and synthetic content: realistic altered or synthetic media is disclosed; no mass-produced AI content farm
  8. Kids on camera: a clear adult runs the channel; no exploitative framing or location oversharing
  9. Consistency: uploading for at least 3 months with at least 8 public videos; no visible removals
  10. Age band assigned (Little ones 2–5, Kids 6–9, Tweens 10–12, All-family)

Who reviews, and how often

An AI pre-screen flags issues, then a person watches the sample and decides. A second, parent reviewer joins once revenue allows. Every decision is logged with dates, videos watched and the reviewer. Sealed channels are re-reviewed every 90 days (5 new videos). If we remove a seal, we log it publicly ("Seal removed on <date>") without accusations.

About "made for kids"

YouTube requires every creator to set whether their channel or videos are made for kids, and it turns off features such as comments and personalized ads on made-for-kids content. See YouTube Help: Set your channel or video's audience. A clearly child-directed channel set to "not made for kids" fails our checklist. Not legal advice.

Questions

Is the Parent-Approved Seal a certification?

No. It's ChannelZap's editorial opinion that a channel fits a stated age band. It isn't a legal certification, it isn't affiliated with YouTube, and it's never sold.

Can a sponsor or vendor buy the seal?

No. Sponsors, Featured vendors and advertisers have no effect on it.

How do I report a problem with a sealed channel?

Email hello@channelzap.com with the channel and video link. We act within 72 hours and suspend the badge while we re-review.

What does 'Seal review pending' mean?

The channel is a candidate, but a reviewer hasn't finished every checklist item. We never show the seal until every item passes.
